Governor invokes the Emergency Conflagration Act

Governor Kitzhaber Invokes Emergency Conflagration Act in Response to Beaver Complex Fire

Fire located in Jackson and Klamath counties threatens about 170 residences

(Salem, OR) — Governor Kitzhaber invoked the Emergency Conflagration Act on Friday, Aug. 1, in response to the Beaver Complex Fire burning in Jackson and Klamath counties.

In accordance with ORS 476.510-476.610, Governor Kitzhaber determined that a threat to life, safety, and property exists due to the fire and that the threat exceeds the firefighting capabilities of local firefighting personnel and equipment.

By invoking the Emergency Conflagration Act, the Governor ordered Oregon State Police and the Oregon State Fire Marshal to mobilize fire resources statewide and coordinate with all appropriate Fire Defense Chiefs for the use of personnel and equipment to suppress and contain the fire.

"The Beaver Complex in Southern Oregon continues to burn, and the State Fire Marshal and the Department of Forestry are working closely with the local community to minimize threats to people, property and natural resources," Governor Kitzhaber said. "I have directed all available state resources to help contain the fire and ensure that nearby communities have every resource necessary to protect citizens."

The fire has burned more than 11,000 acres. This emergency was declared only for the Beaver Complex Fire and is effective immediately.
