Understanding Medicines in Older Adults: Part 1

From 9:00AM to 4:00PM

Oregon Care Partners presents this two part educational program offering a practical and understandable review of drug therapy in older adults. Part one of the program will discuss why older adults take medicines, how medicines affect older adults differently from younger people and how we can be on the lookout for adverse drug effects. Medicines are a big part of the life of almost every older adult. Older adults commonly use prescription drugs and non-prescriptions products as well as herbal and non-traditional medicines to treat acute and chronic health conditions. These medicines have potential benefits including curing disease, relieving symptoms and improving quality of life but they are also associated with potential risks including adverse side effects and drug interactions. An important part of this program will be a review of the important steps that we can all take to improve drug therapy by asking the right questions and observing the effects of medicines. The program will show you that you don’t have to be a doctor to be involved in an older adults drug therapy – everyone, from nurse to aide to direct care worker can play an important role in monitoring and improving the drug therapy of older adults. After completing Part 1 of this educational program the participant will be able to: - Discuss at least three factors influencing medication use in older adults. - Identify at least two reasons why the aging process may influence medication dosage requirements or response to therapy. - Discuss an example of an adverse drug reaction and how it could be detected, modified, or prevented. - Identify the discipline-specific role the participant may play in optimizing drug therapy.Visit oregoncarepartners.com to register.
