Culver Police Force Dissolved

Posted on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 (PST)

The Culver Police Force is no more. The Culver City Council voted earlier this week to dissolve its one-person police force, terminating Police Chief Kecia Powell, effective immediately. The 43-year-old Powell faces misdemeanor charges of attempted theft and official misconduct. She was placed on paid administrative leave in February, but was reinstated with limited duties in April. A spokesperson for the council says the decision to eliminate the city’s police force came down to saving money, since the city’s insurance bill will be lower if it contracts with another law enforcement agency in the region. City officials must now decide whether to contract with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office or the Madras Police Department.
