It's a contentious issue in La Pine. Deschutes County Commissioners continue to gather information about possibly requiring more efficient septic tanks to reduce the amount of nitrates leaching into the groundwater in the south county area. A 13-member Financial Advisory Committee has been formed to come up with a recommendation about how to direct $35-million toward drinking water protection. The committee's next meeting on the issue is set for this Wednesday at 6:00 PM at the South County Services Center in La Pine. The committee has until May 31st to come up with a recommendation to present to commissioners. Dave Inbody, Assistant to the Deschutes County Administrator, says that if committee members haven't reached a decision by that deadline, they may ask commissioners for more time to craft a recommendation.
