A Day To Honor Veterans

Posted on Friday, November 09, 2007 (PST)

The Bend Veterans Day parade begins at 11:00 on Saturday, Nov. 10. Immediately following the parade, a special ceremony will be held at Brooks Park to dedicate the new Veterans Memorial Bridge, the Randy Lee Newman Memorial Walkway, and American flags on the new bridge.

Brooks Park is adjacent to the Deschutes River at the west end of the new Newport bridge. The Bend City Council voted to honor veterans with these memorials. Mayor Bruce Abernethy will welcome guests and WW II veteran Bob Maxwell, the only living Medal of Honor recipient in Oregon, will unveil the new “Veterans Memorial Bridge” plaque at the west end of the bridge.

Marines from Twenty Nine Palms, CA will escort the Newman family while unveiling two memorials to their son, L. Cpl Randy Lee Newman, USMC, who was killed in Iraq last year. The Newman memorials are located on the southern walkway crossing Veterans Memorial Bridge.

A Veterans Day parade is also planned Saturday in Prineville. Redmond's parade is set for Sunday.
